Living with Metabolic Syndrome

Metabolic syndrome and prediabetes can be delayed, prevented, or even reversed through lifestyle changes, such as eating healthier and increasing physical activity. Trying to get to a healthy weight is one of the most effective ways to manage metabolic syndrome because there is such a strong association between obesity and all other metabolic risk factors. Losing weight is likely to have a positive effect on triglyceride levels, blood pressure, HDL levels, and blood glucose levels.

When lifestyle changes aren’t enough to get metabolic risk factors under control, medication may be prescribed for one specific risk factor. For example, a provider may prescribe a medication that lowers blood pressure. However, prescription medications do not replace healthy lifestyle changes as a treatment. All medicines should be used in combination with improved diet and increased physical activity.
